Kevin McLean
Vessel Management

At the age of 21, this North East English native took the chance and jumped at the chance to sail (oh so green) aboard a sailing schooner bound from Spain to the West Indies and onwards to the US. Two years later he was yachting in South Florida as captain on a large (for the time) motor yacht. After numerous charters, deliveries and professional ocean sail racing he settled on the shores of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, and for 10 years fished Georges Bank and the rugged North Atlantic, learning the business from the deck upwards until eventually owning and operating his own trawlers.

With fish increasingly scarce, Kevin studied at sea for a commercial master’s license and secured a captain’s position with a major oil field supply company. Working as master aboard offshore tugs, supply ships and research vessels, mostly in Latin America (Spanish speaker) Kevin increasingly specialized in the formal training of Latin crew and sailing ships to US shipyards for refit and US Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection.

Taking a break from seafaring, Kevin worked as a journalist for marine publications, writing technical articles, policy and features. Later he joined a marine research group in Woods Hole, MA, as Director of Ocean Programs including the sole responsibility for designing and fitting gear and machinery for low environment impact trawling.

Returning to yachting in early 1990 he plunged into the charter business as master on megayachts for over a decade and a half, running between: the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Bahamas and Central America; and the US from Alaska to Maine until coming ashore to work in management and regulation.

Professional Qualifications:
- USCG Master of Oceans, 3,000 Gross Tons ITC
- USCG Z Card Unlimited AB
- ISM Lead Auditor, Maine Maritime Academy, June 2002
- Company/Ship Security Officer, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, June 2004.

In July 2001, Kevin was elected as MEMBER of the prestigious NAUTICAL INSTITUTE based in the UK.

Ken Argent
Vessel Management
/Upload/Person/empty.jpg
Ken Argent was born and educated in England where he lived until 1967 when he sailed for the Caribbean.  He soon became the captain of a sailing charter yacht and continued as a professional captain for many years on a wide selection of sail and motor yachts up to 180’ in length but he was always searching for a new challenge.  In the mid seventies he decided to try commercial fishing.  He bought and fished 2 boats for 10 years from Newport and Point Judith, R.I. during which time he also delivered an experimental, sail assisted, oil drilling platform from New Orleans across the Atlantic to the North Sea.  After the fishing industry collapsed in New England he worked as Captain on 200’+ Oil Field support vessels servicing rigs in the North Atlantic.  The oil exploration business eventually slowed and he once again returned to running motor yachts.

In 1988 Argent decided to try his hand at yacht brokerage and became President of Castlemain, Inc., the Ft. Lauderdale division of a well-known and respected international yacht brokerage and charter management agency.  Castlemain Marine was founded in England in 1964 and had offices in France and Spain as well as Florida.  He served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association during his ownership of the Company.  He sold the brokerage firm in 1997 and took some time for himself until 2000 when he went to Maine Maritime Academy where he obtained Lead Auditor status for the I.S.M. Code. Since that time he has assisted several of the larger yachts to become compliant with the I.S.M. code which is now mandatory for any yacht over 500 g.r.t. intending to charter. When it became apparent that the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code ( ISPS) was going to affect yachts he attended the Star Center in Dania to become qualified as a Company and Ship Security Officer.

Since 2002 Argent has served as Designated Person Ashore and Company Security Officer for Moran Yacht & Ship charter fleet.

In addition to the service noted in this bio Argent has worked with several law firms as an expert witness to testify at trials concerning yacht and ship construction flaws, insurance claims, accidents at sea and all matters and related problems. He has hands on experience in most areas of vessel systems construction, modification and refit.
